Flooring & tiling advice

Installing laminate flooring is easy, and after you’ve done it once, you will wonder why anyone ever pays professional installers to do it. Unlike ceramic tile, waterproof LVP/LVT flooring is a dry installation—no grout, no mortar, no adhesives that set up while you’re working. And unlike solid hardwood flooring that needs to be nailed down, laminate snaps together and lies in place.

Waterproof flooring LVP / LVT flooring is a floating floor material that isn’t attached to the subfloor or underlayment. Waterproof flooring LVP / LVT installation is much like putting together a large puzzle and should take no more than one day for almost any room.

For proper installation, the subfloor or old flooring surface must be flat, smooth, and clean. Waterproof flooring LVP / LVT flooring can usually be installed successfully right over old floor coverings, such as sheet vinyl, provided the surface is flat, smooth, and not soft or cushiony. A simple underlayment of foam sheeting is usually sufficient as a base for the waterproof flooring LVP / LVT planks. If the floor surface has damage or unevenness throughout, you may need to remove it and lay down a rigid underlayment of thin plywood before installing the waterproof flooring LVP / LVT flooring.

Before beginning the installation, remove all baseboards and trim around the perimeter of the room as well as any heating registers or air return duct covers mounted in the floor. Thoroughly sweep and/or vacuum the entire floor.

Laminate flooring is very durable making it a great choice for high traffic areas, such as living rooms or foyers. But today’s Waterproof flooring aren’t limited to specific rooms. The detail and style make it a visually appealing flooring option. Waterproof materials such as LVP / LVT and ease of installation allow it to be used in kitchens and even bathrooms. Some waterproof LVP / LVT are also a great choice for basements. Just be sure to read the product information on underlayment and installation requirements.

Using Laminate Flooring on Walls
Most laminate floor planks can be applied to interior walls (not ceilings or countertops). Make sure your wall is clean and dry, plumb (vertical) and stable. Follow the product instructions for preparing the substrate. You’ll probably need to remove the padding (if attached, and prime the wall before installing.

You can install carpet or vinyl tiles squares on concrete, ceramic, and even existing vinyl flooring. However, the surface must be clean and well-leveled for the tiles to adhere firmly to the adhesive. If you have a ceramic floor, sometimes it is best to remove these tiles before laying the vinyl. However sometimes depending on the depth of the grout line in the ceramic tile sometimes it can be skimmed or it may need to be poured with floor leveler.

Repair cracks on a concrete floor with concrete filler. Using a carpenter’s leveler, check for any high or low spots on the floor. Grind down high spots using a belt sander. You might have to use a self-leveling concrete compound to correct a particularly sloppy floor.

If you have vinyl flooring, level the existing floor before laying new floor. Otherwise, the new tiles will eventually take on the rough texture of the old flooring. Embossing leveler is an excellent choice for straightening any roughness and dents on the old floor surface.

The last option not one you want to hear but, you might want to remove the entire floor if it is too old or damaged for an embossing leveler. However, another more accessible alternative maybe to build a plywood underlayment on top of the old floor. The underlayment will give you a nice, flat, and stable surface for laying your tile squares. You can watch this video on how to build a plywood subfloor.
